Erasmus and Thomas More Visit the Children of Henry VII

In 1499 Thomas More invited the scholar Eramus to accompany him to a "certain great house" to visit friends who had a "great desire" to see Erasmus.  The great house turned out to be Eltham Palace and the friends, the royal family.

This mural painting in oil by pre-Raphaelite artist Frank Cadogan Cowper (1877-1958) depicts the event.   Erasmus, kneeling, presents the future Henry VIII with a poem, which the prince had asked him to write. King Henry VII, in red and holding a rose, looks on intently.  Next to him is Thomas More.

The painting now hangs in the East Corridor of Westminister Palace, London.
